Autism is a disorder that disables the ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is usually diagnosed by the age of 3.
This disorder usually affects boys more than girls. There are 3 modes in the autism spectrum disorder, it goes from mild to severe. However, If a girl is diagnosed with autism, there would be a possibility that they get the severe form of autism. Children diagnosed with autism will be sensitive to sensory activity. For example, they might be hitting themselves, jumping up and down, they also might be yelling or screaming. There is sadly a misunderstanding about kids with autism, meaning that people think that their parents cant control their kids.Years ago i use to be a behavior interventionist working with children with autism. I had clients that were on the autism spectrum. These clients would be mild to severe; as a behavior interventionist I would have them learn labels, as well as how to interact with others. I would use ABA techniques (applied behavioral analysis), this would include teaching them how to use the bathroom, how to ask for things using either sign language or an app that helps them communicate and ask for things. I would also teach parents how to keep up with their kids progress by having them continue their lessons. I would know when my clients needed a sensory break and have them play with playdough to jumping on their trampolines. Another lesson I would teach my clients is how take turns playing with someone. For example, would have them play with playdough and then i would say my turn and they would pass the playdough to me. There are several types of therapy that the kids would be doing. For instance, speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy. Most parents, usually use all these therapies on their kids. also, these parents will enroll kids in a special education school, where their kids would have an IEP plan that is specifically for them and show their teachers where they are at in their IEP and tell them their specific behaviors. My career goal is to be a special education teacher. I loved being a behavior interventions and working with kids that have autism. It is one of the most rewarding experiences that I ever had.
